Why is masculinity so often linked to violence? How have changes in media over time changed out perceptions of masculinity?

Why is masculinity so often linked to violence?  How have changes in media over time changed out perceptions of masculinity?

Masculinity In my opinion is so highly linked to violence because its in relation to the food chain. When you think of a food chain you think of the weakest link being on the lower of the todem pole and the toughest or "masculine" of them all being at the top. To defeat the weaker you must be stronger. Over time this thought of being strong and most powerful became related to masculinity. So the food chain can be of violence. A tiger will maul a zebra because they are faster stronger and essentially more masculine than a zebra. So the buffer and more athletic human would be considered more masculine than the smaller scrawny human becasue he/ she would be able to dominate violently ( as in a food chain) over them.

Changes in media over time have changed drastically! The perceptions of masculinity have grown and litterally "grown". In the vidoe "Tough Guise" they had photo examples of the james bond characters and the gun sizeds. As they years went on and on the size of the gun that the spy has in his hand gets larger and larger seemining more tough or masculine like. Another example is the super heros. Batman was once a slender fit man who faught crime successfully, but as the newer Batman came out his character became buffer and more idealized as a masculine figure. Again masculinity over time became bigger and bigger.

How do American athletics represent masculinity?

How do American Athletics Represent Masculinity?

American athletics play a huge roll in how men are viewed as masculine. One would not see a man who is a pediatrician  the same as one who is a star football player. A football player is viewed as masculine because of the competitiveness and the aggression that is involved. A man is to be quick, strong, and aggressive in football as a pediatrician is to be nurturing, educated, and passive thus giving two very different views of a man and how masculine he is. Gender is what traits the person carries. If a male is very masculine he is said to have the gender of a man but if he holds feminine traits his gender is that of a women. Athletics are competitive and essentially they do show who is at the top and the strongest of them all.

What do our cultural interests in sex say about us?

Whet do our cultural interests in sex say about us as as Americans? When someone firsts meets you they will imediatley judge you on your sex appearence wether they are aware of it or sure not. One will seee what your wearing and if its sexy or more reserved and they then will start to create your profile. Pornography also has become a large contributor in todays cultural interests.

Pornography is much more widley spread and is at literally everyones fingertips even children! With just a simple click of the mouse children and adults all over the US can acess many types of pornography. People are sold on products that use a pornographic like advertisement. Why is this? Americans have now associated pornography and sex in stereotyping people. This to me says that we as Americans over time have lessened our morals and set lower standards as a culture. I beleive we are much to concerened about the human body and the way it is exposed.
